In an exclusive interview with John Bryson, Chairman and CEO of Edison International by CNBC reporter, Dylan Ratigan explained a new direct method of delivering solar energy. The process is called Photovoltaic technology,which means it converts sun energy directly into power within the solar cell. The unique aspect of this project, as explained by John Bryon involves leasing about 2 ½ miles of rooftops in the hotter regions of Southern California. The roof tops will be fitted with thin-film solar cells and have the ability to literally dump electricity into the surrounding community. The communities have been preselected to include areas where Southern California Edison has a growing customer base. The advantage of the photovoltaic technology is that it does not require a separate transmission station or added fuel costs. The thin-cell solar manufacturers has not been determined at this time.According to Mr. Bryson, the Photovoltaic Roof Top Project is planning to be up and running in its initial phase by this Summer. The process when it begins can almost immediately begin to produce electricity to relieve the additional burden of air conditioning and the like during the hot season. The cost of the project is estimated to be 875 million dollars. The advantage to Edison and its customers is the ability to eventually according to large scale production reduce the cost of energy. Mr. Bryson estimates the new technology on a large scale is cost effective because other methods like natural gas, coal and hydro sources require additional expenditures for transmission and fuel. The State of California is at the forefront of legislation concerning alternative energy sources and has set a mandate that 20 percent of all electricity must be generated by alternative energy sources by 2010. According to Mr. Bryson, Edison International and its subsidiaries are in complete accord with energy conservation. Edison International , local economies, customers and manufacturers may see big dividends in the future for their investment in energy conservation. The project is the single largest solar energy project of its kind on a world-wide basis. (PhysOrg.com) — “Many groups have been working devices that make objects invisible,” Che Ting Chan tells PhysOrg.com. “Most of these devices, however, encompass the object to be cloaked.” Chan, a scientist at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, believes that it is possible to create a cloaking device that would be able to render an object invisible without encompassing it. “With the devices that encompass the object,” Chan continues, “the cloaked subject is ‘blind’. It can’t ‘see’ out through the cloak. We can’t see the object, but the object can’t see us, either. We wanted to create a conceptual design that would let the object ‘see’ out through the cloak while hiding it from sight.” Along with Yun Lai, Huanyang Chen and Zhao-Qing Zhang, Chan believes that this could be accomplished. Their ideas are published in Physical Review Letters: “Complementary Media Invisibility Cloak that Cloaks Objects at a Distance Outside the Cloaking Shell.”Right now, such a device exists only theory. “We haven’t built the device,” Chan says, “but we have shown mathematically how it could work. It is a very specific description of the materials needed. If you have the time and resources, we think it could be done.” He points out that it might have interesting possibilities in a number of fields where invisibility might be desirable. Theoretically, a device such as Chan suggests, would work through complementary media. “Our strategy is to put the cloaking device and the object to be cloak next to each other. The cloaking device is a kind of anti-object. The way the light is gathered and scattered by the two objects – the cloaking device and the object it is making invisible – would cancel each other out.” Chan continues by explaining that the cloaking device would become invisible as well. “Both must be invisible in order for this to be effective, and I think we have shown in theory how this could work.”Chan admits that 100 percent invisibility is only available for one wavelength, however. “Right now, the usefulness, especially for military applications, is limited,” he says. “You can only make the object invisible in one wavelength, so if I made it invisible for the visible spectrum, all someone would have to do is use radar to detect the object. A lot of work would need to be done to make a cloaking device that worked for more wavelengths.” He pauses, before adding, “It might be possible to make the object almost invisible for broader wavelengths, but that would also take a lot of work. And you still wouldn’t have 100 percent visibility.”The Hong Kong team, although interested in rendering objects invisible, is working on another ambitious project. “We have shown that we can cause invisibility in objects, and allow them to ‘see’ out of the cloak,” he says. “We are now working on how to transform how an object looks. Invisibility was just the first step in this. By understanding how complementary media invisibility might work, we can also look at how it might be possible to transform the look of an object into something else. These activities produce metals such as lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and chromium, all of which pose a safety hazard to living organisms and the environment.In the new study, the researchers focused specifically on removing lead from wastewater by designing tube-shaped microbots with three functional layers. The outer layer of graphene oxide adsorbs the lead from the water. The middle layer, nickel, makes the microbots ferromagnetic so that their direction of motion can be controlled by an external magnetic field. The inner layer, platinum, gives the microbots the ability to self-propel themselves through water. When hydrogen peroxide is added to the wastewater, the platinum decomposes the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen microbubbles, and ejecting the microbubbles from the back of the microbot propels it forward. Then the microbots are treated in an acidic solution to remove the lead ions, which can later be recovered and reused. The microbots can also be reused for further lead clean-up. “This is a new application of smart nanodevices for environmental applications,” Sánchez said. “The use of self-powered nanomachines that can capture heavy metals from contaminated solutions, transport them to desired places and even release them for ‘closing the loop’—that is a proof-of-concept towards industrial applications.”In the future, the microbots could even be controlled by an automated system that magnetically guides the swarm to accomplish various tasks. “We plan to extend the microbots to other contaminants, and also importantly reduce the fabrication costs and mass-produce them,” Sánchez said.The combination of self-propelled robots with functional layers also opens the doors for similar designs that could have applications in areas including drug delivery and sensing. © 2016 Phys.org

On Tuesday, the U.S. wholesale chain opened its first location in mainland China and was so inundated with eager shoppers that the store closed early owing to “security concerns.”The next day, Costco began limiting the number of shoppers in its warehouse to 2,000 at a time. “Local police will assist in improving traffic in the area, in order to lessen the disturbance to our neighbors, and we have improved our internal guest flow system,” the company said in a statement on the social media platform WeChat.Costco said that in the coming week, people who have memberships to the store will be notified “if we are nearing maximum capacity or if there are long wait times.”Photos from the store opening show long lines of customers queued up to apply for membership and crowds of people surrounding a roast chicken counter and freezers full of meat.The company, which first opened in the U.S. in 1976 under a different name, offers its members bulk items at wholesale prices. The cavernous stores are known for vast shelves with items stacked nearly to the ceiling.According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, membership to the Shanghai store costs about $42 annually. “Prices of general merchandise in Costco are 30 to 60 percent lower than market prices and the food sold there is 10 to 20 percent cheaper,” Xinhua noted.The low prices certainly created a commotion, with checkout lines two hours long and three-hour waits simply to find a spot in the parking lot.It’s worth noting that some major international brands have had a hard time in China. As Bloomberg reported, “Carrefour SA sold an 80% stake in its China unit at a discount in June while German wholesaler Metro AG is looking to sell its operations.”Sam’s Club, the Walmart-owned rival wholesaler, has had a presence in the Chinese market for more than 20 years. It currently has at least 23 locations there.Costco’s senior vice president for Asia, Richard Zhang, told AFP that the Chinese consumer’s familiarity with Sam’s Club could help his company. “Chinese consumers are ready to pay for a membership card that grants them an exclusive privilege to buy at a warehouse store, it’s not a new concept in the country,” he said.Still, the ongoing U.S.-China trade war could complicate the company’s supply. Durgapur: Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA) has set December 2018 as the target to integrate its entire leased out land into its online payment gateway service.”We have prepared a legacy data of these leaseholders after a lot of hard work. There are around 3,000 such leaseholders, whose tax payments are irregular. Once we integrate them in this online payment gateway, we will be able to keep them updated about their dues and the pending rent can be mopped up easily,” ADDA CEO Arun Prasad said on the sidelines of the launch of a mobile application for both Android and iOS users, for online payment gateway service.The ADDA Online app service was formally launched by its chairman Tapas Banerjee at its office in Durgapur on Monday.It may be mentioned that out of the leased out land belonging to ADDA, 80 percent is residential, 15 percent is commercial and 5 percent is industrial.”We have already prepared a database of shops and have started the process of registering them under ADDA Online. They will be soon getting alerts of the pending amount and the time period they need to clear their dues. They can pay online or can deposit the amount with a private bank with which we have tied up.
