Javier Hernandez: ‘I didn’t have the chance’ at Man Utd or Real

first_imgBayer Leverkusen striker Javier Hernandez believes he would ‘probably have been the star’ at former clubs Manchester United and Real Madrid if he was given the chance.Hernandez was with United for five years up to last summer and scored 37 goals in 103 Premier League games – 49 starts and 54 substitute appearances. He spent 2014-15 on loan at Real and was rarely a starter for them, getting only seven Primera Division run-outs as part of the first XI and 16 from the bench, netting seven times.Since joining Leverkusen in August the 28-year-old Mexico international has started in all but three of his 28 Bundesliga appearances and scored 17 goals. He told FourFourTwo: “If I had more chances at United or Real, I’d probably have been ‘the star’ there as well – we’ll never know.“I didn’t have the chance. I never had the chance to play 20 games in a row so people could say, ‘He’s a good player who should stay’ or, ‘He can’t be the star – he’s not a good player’.“Ask the United fans. The numbers are there. The difference is that Leverkusen want me on the pitch. The others didn’t.” Javier Hernandez left Old Trafford permanently in 2015 1last_img read more

It was generally about football. I enjoyed it. I had a good meeting with him, it was interesting.”Sam Allardyce is the current frontrunner to succeed Hodgson, who quit after overseeing a disastrous Euro 2016 campaign. The Sunderland boss left the club’s pre-season training camp in Austria earlier this week to hold talks over the job.Redknapp had pushed Glenn Hoddle forward for a second spell as Three Lions boss last month, but he believes Big Sam would be a good choice by the FA if he does get it.“I was in Glenn’s camp… but I will be delighted if Sam gets it,” he insisted.“Sam is a good man. He has plenty of knowledge, he will have plenty of enthusiasm for the job, so I will have no problems if Sam gets the job.“I want an English manager, that is important to me. I want to see one of the English boys get it.“It will be interesting if Sam gets the job who they put alongside him. I am sure they will want to bring in a young guy as a manager for the future. That seems to be the plan. It will be interesting who they select, if Sam gets the job, to work with him.”last_img read more

NFL: Alexander runs away with MVP

first_img Still, Alexander talked plenty about it after being told he earned 19 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the NFL. He ended the two-year reign of Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning, who received 13 votes. “You never know how voting goes, so you can’t get caught up in that,” he said. “But everyone wants to put themselves in a position where you can say you are one of those top players. And that’s how you get to the Super Bowl. And that’s how you win 13 games. That was our goal.” “Expensive phone call,” Mora said. “Consider that a lesson learned.” Vikes pick Childress The Vikings have selected Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress to be their next head coach, according to two persons with knowledge of the coaching search. Childress confirmed contract negotiations were ongoing Thursday night at a Minneapolis hotel. The Vikings are expected to hold a news conference this morning at Winter Park. The Houston Texans are looking inside and outside the organization to find a replacement for fired coach Dom Capers. They met with one of each: receivers coach Kippy Brown and Kansas City offensive coordinator Al Saunders. Jim Bates, the Packers’ current defensive coordinator, will interview with general manager Ted Thompson next week for the head coaching job. Viking in court Minnesota Vikings running back Moe Williams pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a bawdy boat party. Williams’ attorney, Joe Friedberg, said he entered the plea in Hennepin County District Court. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. And with free agency on the horizon, the Seattle running back could parlay his sensational year into unprecedented riches. “Marsh and I go golfing and he will talk about MVPs and this and that as he drops another putt in,” Alexander said. “It is one of those things where I think it is more for the writers and media until after you retire. When you retire, that is when guys seem like they talk about it a little bit more.” last_img read more

Pasadena officer will stand tall in new job

first_imgPASADENA – After a career that started with people telling him he may not advance because he was too short and soft-spoken, Cmdr. Rod Uyeda left Pasadena on Friday to become chief of the Manhattan Beach Police Department. “I never said I wanted to be a chief of police,” Uyeda said. “I never focused on it or was driven to do that. But at this point in my life I’m very excited to be given the opportunity.”Uyeda, 49, has been with the Pasadena Police Department for almost 30 years. When he was younger, studying at UCLA, he said he never considered entering law enforcement because, at 5 feet 6 inches, he was too short. Law enforcement agencies once required applicants to be at least 5 feet 8 inches tall. The restrictions were eliminated and Uyeda came to Pasadena. But he was one of the short ones, so people would nicely say that his career might not go far, he said.In Pasadena, Uyeda has been known for being well-organized, disciplined and committed to the profession, said Chief Bernard Melekian.“He cares about his people and he knows how to take operational theory and make it a reality,” Melekian said. Manhattan Beach has about 33,000 residents and one of the lowest crime levels in the state, Uyeda said. Traffic is the primary issue for the police, he said. Uyeda said he is proud of how diverse the Pasadena Police Department has become in the past 30 years. It was primarily white males when he came, but now is one of the most diverse in the state in terms of gender, race and sexual orientation, he said. Also, Uyeda said he is pleased to see how crime has dropped in Pasadena during his tenure. It was once routine to have 20 or 30 homicides a year, he said. Now the number is between four and six annually. Lt. Paul Gales will replace Uyeda as the new commander of the Special Operations Division. 578-6300, Ext. 4461 AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORECoach Doc Rivers a “fan” from way back of Jazz’s Jordan Clarkson160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Clippers posse up, beat Sonics

first_imgThe shorthanded Clippers again played without Elton Brand and Corey Maggette. But they blew out the Seattle SuperSonics anyway. Buoyed by 25 points with 10 rebounds from Chris Kaman, the Clippers won a second consecutive game with a 98-72 victory in front of 18,099 Saturday night at Staples Center. The Clippers led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter and by 17 in the first half. Drama surrounding the game was hardly apparent, but there was some Clipper drama as coach Mike Dunleavy had a meeting earlier in the day with Corey Maggette to explain the possibility of swapping him for Indiana’s Ron Artest. Indiana rejected that trade. Another factor that hindered the trade is that Maggette is expected to be out six weeks with a separated ligament in his left foot. Indiana’s medical staff did not give the Pacers the go-ahead to make the deal. Where all of this puts Dunleavy and the Clippers is a place where Maggette knows the team wanted to trade him. The Clippers swingman, however, says he understands the nature of the business. The Clippers didn’t need Maggette on Saturday. But the Sonics were shorthanded, too, without Ray Allen, who served the second game of a three-game suspension for fighting with former Clipper and current Orlando Magic guard Keyon Dooling. Brand also was out with a bruised right hip, but he was in uniform and is considered day to day. The Clippers led by 17 points in the second quarter after a 16-0 run and entered the fourth quarter with a 76-58 lead. Kaman shot 10 of 12 from the field to tie a career high and season high with 25 points. Sam Cassell joined Kaman with a strong game with 24 points and six assists. Rashard Lewis scored 22 points to lead Seattle, which lost its fifth of six games. The Sonics also were without starting center Reggie Evans, who was sick, and Kaman took advantage of that. “When they went with a small lineup, we tried to punish them,” Kaman said. “And we did a decent job. We turned the ball over a couple times on the double-teams, and I was frustrated a little bit. But overall, it was good.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! While Dunleavy says he still is optimistic about this season, that attitude didn’t prevent him and general manger Elgin Baylor from meeting with the controversial Artest in an effort to trade Maggette for him. “We’re totally confident about where we are and what our direction is,” Dunleavy said. “As it comes down to it, we have responsibilities to explore every opportunity that’s out there. Along the way, we haven’t hidden the fact we’ve had an interest. And that’s true. We have had an interest in Artest. He’s a unique talent, and so you talk to people, you talk about different things, potential deals that can work and cannot work.” As the Clippers try to recover from missing the injured Maggette, Dunleavy also confirmed that the Clippers have contacted veteran free agent Latrell Sprewell to gauge his interest in signing with them. Artest, who was suspended 72 games last season for his role in a brawl in Detroit, has been on the Pacers’ inactive list since Dec. 12, two days after demanding to be traded. He is a former All-Star who some consider among the elite players in the league, while Maggette has never been an All-Star but has been solid as the Clippers’ second leading scorer. last_img read more
