A family fun day entitled, ‘Christmas Breeze’, will be held on Sunday, December 17 at Holywell, the main recreation area in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park and World Heritage Site. The event, which begins at 10:00 a.m., is being staged by the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT), the organisation that manages the Park on behalf of the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA).This is one of the many activities being staged by the JCDT to observe the 25th anniversary of the National Park, to be celebrated on February 25, 2018. The Park was established in 1993 through the Natural Resources Conservation Order and comprises a group of forest reserves gazetted under the old Forest Act of 1937.Executive Director of the JCDT, Dr. Susan Otuokon, told JIS News that a decision was taken to begin the activities in December this year. She said it will be a “fun, cool entertaining day for the whole family” and persons will be able “to experience the real Christmas breeze up in the mountains”.“We will have face painting, guided trail tours, a guided tour of the visitors’ centre featuring craft making of Christmas tree decorations using recycled materials as well as natural found materials such as twigs and leaves,” she said. The JCDT will host ‘The Peak Challenge’ on January 27, 2018. Dr. Otuokon said the JCDT will be challenging Jamaicans to hike to the Blue Mountain peak, the highest point in the island. She is encouraging Jamaicans from youth clubs, church and family groups to visit the Blue Mountains at least once in their lifetime. Persons can email jamaicaconservation@gmail.com or call 920-8278-9 for further details.“We can make the arrangements. A lot of people do not realise that the Blue Mountain trail is within the National Park and, in fact, quite a lot is in the world heritage site and so it is really a very special trail,” she said, adding that peak hikers are required to pay $200, a legislative fee under the National Parks Regulations. To celebrate the anniversary on February 25, Dr. Otuokon said there will be a musical event titled, ‘Symphony in the Mountains’, scheduled to take place on that date at Holywell. She said the event will feature The Abeng Tour and screening of the ‘Nanny, Queen of the Maroons’ documentary. The event will also include the Immaculate Conception High School Symphony Orchestra, the Kingston College Chapel Choir, master drummers from the Charles Town Maroons and the premiere of the Fourth Movement of the Maroon Symphony – ‘Onslaught’.“This movement tells the story of the Great Maroon War from 1728-1739, which ended with the signing of a peace treaty as the British knew they were defeated. It includes drumming and just about every single orchestral instrument that you can imagine,” Dr. Otuokon said. Boushie family confident concrete change to come following Ottawa meetings

first_imgAPTN NewsThe family of Colten Boushie says they’ve gotten exactly what they had hoped from their trip to Ottawa where they met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and several of his cabinet ministers. And that is a commitment from the Trudeau government to change the justice system.“There was a general consensus that there are systemic issues regarding Indigenous people in the judicial system,” said Jade Tootoosis, Boushie’s cousin Tuesday afternoon. “Each person has promised to work with us to make concrete changes within the justice system.“That’s exactly what we came here for.”More from the press conference that took place in Ottawa After meeting ministers Jane Philpott and Carolyn Bennett on Monday, Boushie’s spoke with Trudeau, as well as Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould and Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale Tuesday.“I thanked them for their thoughtful sharing of the story and the difficulties they faced with both the justice system and with the police,” Trudeau said following the meeting. “They are very much focused on making sure that we have improvements to our system so that no family has to go through the kinds of things they went through.”Raybould said it was a “very honest, very emotional” meeting.“I don’t know if the right word is hopeful but they reflected broadly on the criminal justice system and how we need to build relationships and work together to make improvements to the criminal justice system from speaking about all actors, whether it be in the courts, in corrections,” said Wilson-Raybould.An all-white jury found Gerald Stanley, a white farmer in Battleford, Sask., not-guilty in Boushie’s death on Friday. The verdict sparked cross-country rallies and calls for an overhaul of the criminal justice system.Wilson-Raybould said the government will have more details about a justice review in “the near future.”Meanwhile, Goodale echoed condemnations for the racist comments that have flooded social media in the days following the verdict.“There is absolutely no place for that in a province like Saskatchewan or anywhere else,” Goodale, who represents the Regina-Wascana riding, told reporters. “We all have to recognize our common interest in peaceful, secure safe communities and all of the forces and factors that go into creating those kinds of communities. We’re all in this together and we need to work very carefully together.”Boushie’s relatives have said RCMP officers were insensitive and initially treated family members like suspects on the day of his death Aug. 9, 2016. Goodale said the independent Civilian Review for Complaints and Commission is looking into it.last_img read more

Vick Throws Support Behind Foles For Starting Position

Howard Smith-USA TODAY SportsPhiladelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly, who has used two quarterbacks all season, joked that Nick Foles will start at the QB position for this week. The only thing is, the Eagles have a bye this week. Now that QB Michael Vick is healthy enough to play again, Kelly will have to answer a question seriously next week. How can you bench Foles? That is an answer Vick himself wants to know.“In all honesty, in all fairness, how can you take a guy out of the game who’s been playing so well?” Vick told WIP 94, via CSN Philly, on Thursday.“I’ve been in this stage before, and I know what it’s like. I understand the position that this team is in, and the one thing I never want to do is be a distraction or put our team or our coaches in a position where they feel like they’re not doing the right thing or I feel like they’re not doing the right thing. I trust what’s going on, I enjoy being a part of it, I love the game of football in general. So it’s important to me to be there in support and be ready if my name and number is called again.”Philadelphia has won three-straight games and is at the top of the NFC East behind Foles. He also hasn’t thrown an interception all season.“He had an opportunity to learn from me this year and last year and just sit behind me and pick my brain, and he also went out and played the game, and now he’s just taking that and everything is unfolding for him,” Vick said. “He’s going out there and everything he’s worked for and put into his game, he’s putting it to work, and that’s what you’ve seen.“He can potentially be a starter in this league for a long time. It’s just about timing, as of right now. As long as he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s going to continue to build that case.” read more

Subaru stops two Japanese factories to address powersteering defect

Subaru has discovered a defect in the power-steering systems of some of its Japanese-built vehicles, and has shut down the plants briefly as it investigates the root cause. On Wednesday Subaru announced that it had idled two plants in Japan’s Gunma prefecture on Jan. 16 when it discovered a defect that may disable a vehicle’s power steering and illuminate a warning lamp. According to the automaker’s press release, it hopes to have the plant up and running again on Jan. 28.The two plants comprise a majority of Subaru’s global manufacturing, including some models destined for the US. A Subaru spokesperson said approximately 10,000 examples of the Crosstrek and Forester might be affected, but the final number may be smaller.Enlarge ImageSubaru’s Japanese plants represent an overwhelming majority of its global sales, and the company isn’t sure how the shutdown will affect its bottom line in the short term. Yoshikazu Tsuno/AFP/Getty Images The spokesperson also stressed that no affected units have reached dealers or consumers, so there won’t be a need for a recall in the US. Any vehicles en route to retailers will receive a permanent fix before going on sale. This problem does not affect Subaru vehicles built in the US at its Indiana facility. In its press release, Subaru said it’s still working to determine the cause. A loss of power steering can make turning the wheel more difficult, especially at idle. Subaru Japan recommends that Japanese owners who experience this fault should stop driving and contact a dealer. In addition to affecting the Forester and Crosstrek (called the XV) in Japan, the problem also affects the Japanese-market Impreza.Subaru suffered a scandal in Japan in 2017 when it copped to decades of “flawed” vehicle inspections. Both Subaru and Nissan admitted to using unauthorized employees in quality-control jobs, in violation of Japanese regulations. Both automakers recalled vehicles for additional inspections following their admissions. Google to ask Android users to choose preferred browser

first_img Comments Google Samsung Alphabet Inc. Tags Phones Tech Industry Google will soon prompt Android users to choose their preferred browser. Jaap Arriens/NurPhoto via Getty Images Google will prompt Android users to choose their preferred web browser and search apps, a senior Google executive said Tuesday, as it tries to avoid new EU antitrust sanctions. The European Commission slapped Google with a record fine of 4.34 billion euros ($5 billion) in July over antitrust violations related to the Android mobile operating system. Google’s agreements with phone makers such as Huawei, Samsung and LG put those companies at a disadvantage because they’re completely dependent on Android, the EU said.Android users have always had the ability to install any browser they wanted, but now Google will highlight that they have other browser and search engine options.Google will do more to “ensure that Android phone owners know about the wide choice of browsers and search engines available to download to their phones,” Kent Walker, senior vice president of Google, wrote in a blog post. “This will involve asking users of existing and new Android devices in Europe which browser and search apps they would like to use.”In response to the $5 billion fine, Google said in October it would begin offering a paid license for phone and tablet manufacturers in Europe that want to include its Google Play app store, Maps, Gmail and Google-owned YouTube. Another license will let phone makers include Google’s search engine and Chrome browser. The EU’s investigation into Android dominance dates back to 2016. In June 2017, it fined Google $2.7 billion over abusing the way it prioritizes its own shopping results in search. Share your voice 4last_img read more

However, one game is adding a popular feature from the other. PUBG’s update #30 has a new feature called Radio Messages that will let players send short messages to their teammates without using voice chat, according to the patch notes on Wednesday. This addition is similar to Apex Legends’ Ping system. Players can use eight different types of messages via a wheel interface. The messages can ask for ammo or backup if an enemy has been spotted, or simply thank a teammate for helping. Where this new feature resembles Apex Legends’ system is that it allows for pinging. When Apex Legends came out back in February, many players cited its Ping system as one of the most innovative features of the game for allowing players to talk to each other without needing a mic. Game of Thrones season 8 ending preview leaks online furious fans say

first_imgGame of ThronesGame of Thrones Official YoutubeThe final season of Game of Thrones has not lived up to expectations, be it the story, character arcs or the technical details of the show, like the lighting in episode 3 or the coffee cup min episode 4. Fans are dissatisfied by season 8. And to make things worse, reportedly a minute-long preview for the last two episodes of Game Of Thrones’ eighth season was allegedly leaked on Monday, leaving fans livid over the show’s potential ending.According to The Sun, the footage is believed to show major spoilers for the battle of King’s Landing, as well as how the show will end in episode six. Viewers, who had seen the potential spoilers on Twitter, were furious at the prospect of what the leak could mean, with some even going as far as to say that it meant the show had ‘the worst ending in TV history.’ That seems like quite a claim but the way the final season has been progressing, we have to say that we are a little apprehensive about what the last two episodes hold for fans. Aishwarya Rai to be roped in for Koratala Shivas next movie with

first_imgThe first look teaser of Chiranjeevi’s Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is unveiled. It hints the life of Indians during the British rule and the rise of a hero who led a revolutionary movement against them.Finding a heroine for Megastar Chiranjeevi is definitely a big task for any director nowadays. The actor is too old for any young heroine in the industry now and not all the actresses with whom he was worked are not in acting anymore. For Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, he has teamed up with Nayanthara and in Khaidi No.1, he was seen shaking leg with Kajal Aggarwal. Well, it is known that Chiranjeevi is going to team up with director Koratala Shiva, who made films like Mirchi, Janatha Garage, Srimanthudu and Bharat Ane Nenu. All these films have been huge hits at the box office and the director has nothing but back to back hits in his kitty now.So his upcoming film with Chiranjeevi is said to be going on the floors next year and it is expected to be launched on Ugadi. As per the source, after getting in touch with all the possible heroines for this film, it is said that the director is now in the process of getting in touch with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to play the leading lady in this film. If this news is true, there’s no wonder why he has approached the Bollywood diva. The senior most actresses down south are Nayanthara, Shriya Saran, Trisha, Tamannaah Bhatia and Anushka Shetty. But it looks like none of them has given nod to this project.Well, bringing Aishwarya Rai to act with Chiranjeevi is definitely not a bad idea. “The makers are trying to bring the best actress on board and they are not going to compromise with the budget. Because it is still in the pre-production stage and hasn’t been launched, the producers do not want to make any official statements about the cast,” said a source close to the direction team. COPY LINKAD Loading … Air Arabia, with its low-cost model, managed to disrupt the aviation industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). An idea which was initially seen as ‘non-viable’ by many, managed to catapult itself from a $13 million to a $5 billion company. This Low-cost carrier has now expanded its wings globally. But why would someone start a low-cost carrier model in the oil-rich gulf? International Business Times India’s Executive Editor, Danish Manzoor, sat down with the Group CEO of Air Arabia, Adel Abdullah Ali, to explore this. “Everybody’s wish was to travel in the region as UAE has a lot of expat population,” said Adel. When asked about the idea and how his peers reacted to it, Adel said, “Affordability stopped people from traveling home. People were taking holidays after 4-years sometimes. Nobody believed that a low-cost airline will work in the gulf. Many felt we would be bankrupt within 3 to 6 months. But soon we were running at 60% seat occupancy.” “Our model works so well that even the Bus company ferrying people from UAE to the Levant even threatened to sue Air Arabia,” Adel quipped. In 2004, the company broke even and then there was no looking back for Air Arabia. The company currently operates in several countries, including India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, and Russia. These are also the most profitable routes for the airline. Air Arabia’s business model of affordable flying helped the airlines gain early success as continues to expand beyond the Gulf countries as well.In the video interview, Abdullah Ali spoke about the challenges his company faced and his plans to expand and grow operations in Egypt, Morocco as well as in India. Abdullah Ali also busted the long-circling rumor about Air Arabia and Air India merger. “Two business models don’t match. It makes no sense and it will confuse our people and Air India flyers,” Abdullah Ali told Danish on BizTalk.last_img read more

What is bitcoin worth Barclays has an answer to that

first_imgBitcoin, Ethereum are types of cryptocurrencies availableReutersBe it analysts, cryptocurrency experts, renowned researchers, no one has so far been able to derive the real value of bitcoin till date. However, analysts at Barclays think they have a useful method for tracking bitcoin trends — infectious disease models. And by their analysis, the cryptocurrency fever may have broken. The Barclays model divides the pool of potential bitcoin investors into three groups: susceptible, infected and immune.Just like any infectious disease, rise in prices is spread by word-of-mouth – via blogs, news reports and personal anecdotes – as nobody wants to miss out on the rally that made their friends and colleagues rich.”However, once full adoption is approached, the price decline is sustained and rapid,” Barclays analyst Joseph Abate wrote in a note to clients.”As more of the population become asset holders, the share of the population available to become new buyers — the potential ‘host’ population — falls, while the share of the population that are potential sellers (‘recoveries’) increases. Eventually, this leads to a plateauing of prices, and progressively, as random shocks to the larger supply population push up the ratio of sellers to buyers, prices begin to fall. That induces speculative selling pressure as price declines are projected forward exponentially.”The Barclays model suggests that awareness around cryptocurrencies is now almost universal, and only a small group of the population could now catch speculative interest, and buy in.”We believe the speculative froth phase of cryptocurrency investment – and perhaps peak prices – may have passed,” Abate said.Bitcoin has fallen by more than 50 percent in 2018, trading near $6,969 as of 9:00 a.m. Indian Standard Time. The cryptocurrency rose more than 1,300 percent last year, reaching a peak near $20,000 in December. While the cryptocurrency bounced back from past price collapses in 2011 and 2013, the high level of awareness this time around signals bitcoin may never return to its peak of nearly $20,000 in December, according to the Barclays model.last_img read more

Ramaphosa elected South Africa president

first_imgActing president of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa arrives at the parliament, in Cape Town, South Africa, 15 February, 2018. Photo: ReutersSouth African lawmakers on Thursday selected Cyril Ramaphosa as the country’s new president after scandal-tainted Jacob Zuma resigned under pressure from his own ANC ruling party.Ramaphosa was chosen without a vote after being the only candidate nominated, chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng told assembled lawmakers at a special sitting of the parliament in Cape Town. The announcement brought loud cheers from ANC lawmakers, with Ramaphosa due to address the parliament later during proceedings.Zuma resigned on Wednesday as the ANC finally turned against him after a nine-year reign dominated by corruption scandals, economic slowdown and plummeting electoral popularity.Zuma railed against the ANC for “recalling” him from office and — when he at first refused to resign — then threatening to oust him via a parliament no-confidence vote.In an earlier TV interview on Wednesday, Zuma said he had received “very unfair” treatment from the party that he joined in 1959 and in which he had fought for decades against apartheid white-minority rule.Zuma had been in a power struggle with Ramaphosa, his deputy president.Zuma’s hold over the ANC was broken in December when his chosen successor — his former wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma — narrowly lost to Ramaphosa in a vote to become the new party leader.last_img read more
