Wilmington Public Schools Receives 750000 Grant To Improve The Health Of Its Students

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Public Schools recently received a substantial grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to expand its health services in an effort to improve student attendance and boost academic achievement.Wilmington was awarded a four-year Comprehensive School Health Services Grant at $75,000 annually. The grant comes with three, 2-year options to renew, meaning Wilmington excepts to receive $750,000 in funding. The grant process was competitive. Wilmington’s grant amount was based on student enrollment, community need, and the level of programming that schools committed to in their grant applications. Wilmington was one of 123 public school districts in the state to receive the grant. The grant writing committee recently appeared in front of the Wilmington School Committee to share the good news. The Committee consisted of Director of Nursing Services Doreen Crowe; Assistant Superintendent Brian Reagan; Coordinator of Behavioral Health & Social Emotional Support Christine Murray; Health & Physical Education Liaison Laura Stinson; Athletic Director Tim Alberts; ESL Director Susan MacDonald; and Middle School Nurse Janice Bacon.Crowe explained how the funding will positively impact health services to students in Wilmington.A part-time social worker (.4 FTE) will be hired at the high school to support its new Bridge Program, which assists students who have been absent from school for an extended period of time due to a health issue to successfully return to the classroom.A part-time care coordinator (.4 FTE) will be hired to help coordinating care to students with mental and physical health needs. In addition to program support and professional development, the district will use funds to improve and expand its health curriculum. As a result of the grant, Athletic Director Tim Alberts noted that health education will now be offered at the PreK and Kindergarten levels, and new nutrition education materials will be purchased at the elementary level. The district hopes these measures – and several others outlined – will help decrease chronic absenteeism and childhood obesity amongst its students, while increasing individualized health care plans and services to its students with mental and behavioral health conditions.“All the evidence points to the fact that children can’t learn if they are not healthy,” said Massachusetts Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders in a recent press release announcing the grant recipients. “This funding will support our efforts to keep students healthy, in school, and prepared to learn.”Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. PUBG takes page from Apex Legends in new update

first_img I thought this might be a mistake, but, no, the weirdly named HP Laptop 15t Value is indeed quite the value at this price. Specs include an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 15.6-inch display. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. Read Google Home Hub review Comments PUBG is getting a new feature Apex Legends players will recognize.  Bluehole/Krafton In the realm of battle royale games, PUBG and Apex Legends are still a ways from catching up to Fortnite. However, one game is adding a popular feature from the other. PUBG’s update #30 has a new feature called Radio Messages that will let players send short messages to their teammates without using voice chat, according to the patch notes on Wednesday. This addition is similar to Apex Legends’ Ping system. Players can use eight different types of messages via a wheel interface. The messages can ask for ammo or backup if an enemy has been spotted, or simply thank a teammate for helping. Where this new feature resembles Apex Legends’ system is that it allows for pinging. PUBG Radio MessagesThe new wheel UI to send messages for PUBG.  Bluehole/Krafton If a PUBG player is near an item or sees an enemy, selecting “ping” from the wheel interface will relay the position of said item or enemy to their teammates. This allows for players who chose not to, or are unable to, use voice chat to still communicate and strategize with their team. When Apex Legends came out back in February, many players cited its Ping system as one of the most innovative features of the game for allowing players to talk to each other without needing a mic. Others changes in update #30 are the ability to ledge grab so players can climb onto roofs or over fences, the addition of Desert Eagle handgun and gas cans will now blow up if shot. The new patch is currently available on the PUBG PC test servers and will make its way to the live game soon.  Sarah Tew/CNET Turo: Save $30 on any car rental $999 See at Amazon See It Lenovo Smart Clock: $59.99 (save $20) 7 What’s cooler: A snapshot of a firework exploding in front of you, or full 360-degree video of all the fireworks and all the reactions to seeing them? May fends off opponents of draft Brexit deal

first_imgA video grab from footage broadcast by the UK Parliament`s Parliamentary Recording Unit (PRU) shows Britain`s prime minister Theresa May giving a statement to the House of Commons in London on 22 November on the draft declaration, laying out plans for future relations with the European Union. Photo: AFPBritish prime minister Theresa May on Thursday fended off heavy opposition in parliament after Britain and the EU agreed on the outlines of post-Brexit ties as part of a draft deal due to be signed off by EU leaders. After briefing her cabinet in a hastily-arranged teleconference call, May addressed the House of Commons, saying the agreement was the “best possible deal”.EU Council President Donald Tusk said the 26-page declaration covering trade, security, the environment and other issues was agreed “in principle” and would be sent to the other 27 member states for approval. The pound leapt by about one percent against the dollar and also firmed against the euro on the news, which allayed fears Britain could leave the European Union next March with no new arrangements in place. But the deal does not address the thorny issues of fishing rights and Gibraltar, which have raised concerns in EU capitals. After the draft declaration was agreed on Thursday, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez repeated a threat to sink the deal if Madrid’s concerns on Gibraltar were not met.And the deal could still yet be rejected by the British parliament.British MPs of all parties criticised the divorce agreement announced last week, which includes a financial settlement and a controversial plan to avoid a hard Irish border.May hopes the promise of future cooperation will act as a sweetener to persuade her own Conservative MPs and any wavering opposition lawmakers to back her.Leap in the darkBut her critics were quick to point out that the political declaration was not legally binding, unlike the terms of the divorce.Former foreign minister Boris Johnson, who is seen as a potential leadership rival, said the draft deal “makes a complete nonsense of Brexit”.Other leading pro-Brexit Conservative MPs, as well as her Northern Irish allies the DUP, urged May to renegotiate the divorce agreement to remove a contentious legal guarantee to ensure an open Irish border.Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn confirmed his party would not back it, saying: “This is the blindfold Brexit we all feared, a leap in the dark.”The deal was struck after through-the-night talks between British and EU negotiators, which followed a last-minute visit to Brussels by May for a meeting with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker. She will return on Saturday, on the eve of a special summit where all 28 EU leaders are expected to sign off on the overall Brexit package.Critical momentFirst, the texts must be cleared by a meeting of top EU diplomats — the summit’s so-called “sherpas” — on Friday.”The negotiations are now at a critical moment, and all our efforts must be focused on working with our European partners to bring this process to a final conclusion,” May said. The political declaration, seen by AFP, says future ties will be wide-ranging, covering economic cooperation, law enforcement and criminal justice, foreign policy, security and defence. It includes references to Britain developing “an independent trade policy” and declares an end to free movement of citizens between Britain and the EU — two key demands of the Brexit campaign in the 2016 referendum. In the Commons, May also highlighted the possibility that the Irish border issue can be resolved through the use of technology, rather than through the controversial “backstop” customs arrangement included in the divorce deal. This is intended to avoid new border checks between British Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, an EU member, after a transition period ends in December 2020.It says that unless alternative arrangements are made, Britain will stay in a customs union with the EU and Northern Ireland will continue to follow the bloc’s single market rules.Conservatives fear this would mean following the EU’s rules indefinitely, while Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which props up May’s government, also opposes it.They have already warned they could reject the deal if it leads to the province being separated from the rest of the UK.The EU has also agreed to update the divorce deal to allow a possible extension of the transition period “for up to one or two years” if needed to agree the new future relationship. We will veto BrexitHowever, the issue of Gibraltar remains, with Spain demanding a veto over applying any agreement on post-transition relations to the territory on its southern border which it has long claimed.Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, current holder of the rotating EU presidency, conceded the problem as he arrived for pre-scheduled talks with May in Downing Street.”There are some issues now regarding Gibraltar with Spain, but I hope that we can keep the unity among the 27,” he said.May, who spoke to Prime Minister Sanchez about the issue on Thursday, took a firm line, however.”Gibraltar’s British sovereignty will be protected, and the future relationship we agree must work for the whole UK family,” she told MPs.But late Thursday Sanchez maintained his threat to scupper the deal.”After my conversation with Theresa May, our positions remain far away. My government will always defend the interests of Spain,” Sanchez wrote on Twitter.”If there are no changes, we will veto Brexit.”last_img

YouTube to Launch a Separate Video Game Service

first_img This summer, YouTube is making a major play in the gaming world. The Google-owned video platform is slated to launch YouTube Gaming — a site and app dedicated exclusively to video game-related content. The most popular performer on all of YouTube, for instance, is PewDiePie, a gamer with more than 37 million subscribers and 9 billion views.“On YouTube, gaming has spawned entirely new genres of videos, from let’s plays (humorous playthroughs with commentary), walkthroughs (strategic guides) and speedruns (an attempt to complete a game as fast as possible) to cooking and music videos,” wrote Alan Joyce, product manager, in a blog post announcing the endeavor.Related: As Facebook Video Swells, YouTube Creators Cry Foul Over Copyright InfringementThe new hub will feature specific pages for more than 25,000 total games as well as channels from game publishers and popular creators. Live streaming will be at the epicenter of YouTube Gaming, Joyce wrote, and in coming weeks, YouTube will revamp its streaming capabilities with features that make it easier to record and alert viewers when a stream is under way.Gaming is the third vertical that YouTube has pursued. After launching a music subscription service called YouTube Music Key late last year, which is still in beta, the company unveiled YouTube Kids, a standalone app, in February.YouTube Gaming is Google’s answer to Twitch, a live-stream gaming site that the search giant reportedly sought to acquire last year, but which Amazon ultimately purchased for $1.1 billion. One key difference, however, is that while Twitch offers creators the ability to monetize by charging for subscriptions, YouTube Gaming will only offer advertising opportunities.Related: WATCH: The 5 Most Popular YouTube Ads of the Past Decade Register Now » 2 min read Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Globalcenter_img Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.
