China Commits to Support Liberia’s Reconstruction

first_imgLiberia and the People’s Republic of China have reached agreements in addition to existing ones to enhance development in the country.Agreements reached between Foreign Ministers Wang Yi of China and Augustine Ngafuan took into consideration increasing the number of scholarships for Liberians from 15 to 40, the establishment of a steel plant, coastal highway construction and training of health personnel to tackle disease outbreaks.Furthermore, Minister Ngafuan said the Chinese Government has committed to donate US$320,000 for the construction of a diplomatic lounge at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) in Margibi County.He disclosed further that the Chinese Government is still committed to constructing the promised US$60 million ministerial complex expected to host about 10 ministries and agencies.Additionally, construction of annexes of the National Legislature and renovation of the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex are some undertakings the Chinese Government has on hand for Liberia.He also disclosed that President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Minister Wang discussed the One-China Policy, and there are indications that Liberia-China bilateral cooperation will continue to produce more positive results.Minister Ngafuan acknowledged the role of China in the Ebola crisis and stressed that, “One who comes by your bedside when sick, is a true friend and not people who show up at festivals.”He said besides the quick response from China during the health crisis in Liberia, the country continues to help in the post-Ebola crisis.Following discussions with President Sirleaf and Minister Ngafuan, Foreign Minister Wang Yi assured Liberia that China will meet up with Liberia’s development needs with a balanced approach to sustainable development in line with President Xi Jinping’s plan about relations with Africa.Minister Wang said China’s focus is on infrastructure and human development, and processing capacity needed to sustain development and create jobs in Liberia.In response to a question about Liberia’s relations with the United States, the Minister indicated that the choice lies with Liberia to adapt multi-cooperation with other countries in accordance with its development needs.He said the presence of Chinese companies in Liberia, constructing roads and implementing other projects, can attest that China is interested in developing and helping Liberians get out poverty.He also indicated that China and the United States are working hand in hand, noting, “The Foreign Ministry building of Liberia was built by the U.S. Government, but refurbished by China.He added that as demonstrated during the heat of the health crisis, China was the first to come in with support and was also able to send medical supplies and built solid Ebola Treatment Units (ETUs) before others came and did likewise.This, according to him, was meant to save lives and not to wait till people died in their numbers before assistance could come in to rescue affected persons.Minister Wang identified poverty and underdevelopment as factors to the prevalence of diseases in least developed countries.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
