He joined PSG for £50m in 2014, but returned in 2016 for £34m. 15 15 Chelsea signed Ramires for £17m in 2010 – He is probably best remembered for his goal against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final in 2012, a season in which the Blues became kings of Europe. He also won the Europa League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup before moving to China for £25m. 15 Liverpool signed Lazar Markovic for £20m in 2014 – Markovic hasn’t been able to nail down a starting spot at Liverpool and has been on loan at Fenerbahce, Sporting and Hull in that time. Valencia paid £12m for Andre Gomes in 2015 – Gomes only had one season at Valencia before Barcelona paid £29m for him. Previously Valencia also spent big on Gomes’ Benfica team-mates Rodrigo (€30m in 2015), Enzo Perez (€25m in 2015) 15 15 Victor Lindelof was sold to Man United for £30m in 2017 – Europe’s biggest clubs have made Benfica a very rich club in recent years. Real Madrid bought Angel Di Maria for £21m in 2010 – Di Maria was an influential player in his four years in Madrid, winning the league, two Copa de Reys and the Champions League. He put in a man of the match display as Real beat Atletico before joining Man United for £59m. He is now playing for PSG. 15 15 Atletico Madrid £19.7m – After many reports in Portugal linking Man United with Gaitan, he eventually moved to Atletico Madrid in 2016 after six seasons in Portugal. Chelsea bought Nemanja Matic for £21m in 2014 – Chelsea actually let him join Benfica in 2011 when Luiz arrived in London, but they bought the midfielder back where he has become an integral part of the midfield. 15 15 Bayern bought Renato Sanches for £27.5m in 2016 – Sanches won Euro 2016 with Portugal and then made the move to Germany. Although he hasn’t set the league alight, the player is still only 19 years old. Atletico Madrid bought Jan Oblak for £12.6m in 2014 – Oblak has become one of the most sought after goalkeepers in Europe since joining Atletico. He is said to be on Man United’s shortlist to replace David De Gea if the Old Trafford no.1 moves to Real. Monaco bought Bernardo Silva for £12m in 2015 – He didn’t really get the chance to make his mark on the Benfica first team, as Monaco swooped when he was a relatively unknown player. Silva was signed initially on loan in 2014 before the move was made permanent. In France he dazzled, with Tottenham left-back Danny Rose explaining he couldn’t get near him when the two clubs met each other in the Champions League. He won the league with Monaco before joining Man City for £43m in 2017. 15 Zenit paid £32m for Axel Witsel in 2012 – He won the league and cup in Russia and could have moved to Juventus in 2016, but chose the Chinese Super League. Man City bought Javi Garcia for £16m in 2012 – Garcia scored on his City debut, but was never a regular first team player. He was sold to Zenit in 2014 for £13m. Real Madrid signed Fabio Coentrao in a £27m deal in 2011 – Coentrao is actually still at Real Madrid, but is likely to be moving on soon. He has had fitness issues since joining and spent the 2015/16 season at Monaco. Benfica have made a huge amount of money from Europe’s biggest clubs in recent years, with the most recent sale being that of Victor Lindelof and Ederson.The defender joined Man United, while the goalkeeper is at rivals Man City and there are even rumours of United going back to Benfica and buying Anderson Talisca who was on loan at Besiktas in the 2016/17 season.However, despite the Portuguese club constantly selling their best players it has never harmed them in terms of cup success.
