Promoter jailed for cocaine trafficking

first_imgWyette AmsterdamA local party promoter, who was on remand for nine months for cocaine trafficking was on Tuesday sentenced to two years, three months’ imprisonment and fined $2.4 million.Wyette Amsterdam known as “Legacy” of Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, was tried and found guilty of trafficking 1.160 kilograms of cocaine at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus after Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) prosecutors provided sufficient evidence.The magistrate sentenced the man to three years’ imprisonment, however, since he spent nine months on remand, it was deducted from the sentence.The thirty-one-year-old man had initially denied the charge which stated that on October 17, 2018, at Stabroek Market Square, in the vicinity of Lodge Bus Park, he had in his possession 1.160 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.According to CANU’s case, ranks acting on information were watching Amsterdam for one month and on the day in question, the ranks intercepted him in the vicinity of Stabroek Market. A search was carried out and the narcotics along with $600,000 was discovered in a haversack that was on his back. He was then arrested and taken into custody.last_img read more
