5 UL Students Benefit from Int’l Scholarship

first_imgFive aspiring journalists pursuing graduate studies at the University of Liberia (UL) were on Tuesday awarded the Jonathan P. Hicks Family Journalism Mass Communications Scholarship.The J.P. Hicks Family Scholarship, established in 2010, is based in New York, USA to support the next generation of Liberia’s journalists either in print, electronic or online publications.   The scholarship’s recipients represent the fourth batch of students, who are benefiting from the scheme since it was launched in gesture.Present at the occasion were several professors and deans of various academic departments at the UL including, Dr. Ansu Sonii, Dr. Momolu S. Gaytaweh and the chairman of the scholarship committee, Dr. Jonathan P. Hicks–who travelled from New York City — all attended Tuesday’s ceremony held in the conference room of the UL. The beneficiaries include Daily Observer’s diplomatic correspondent, Joaquin M. Sendolo, Patience S. Baker, Mazoe N. Cortee, Mohammed A.A. Fibio and Gbatemah S. Senah. In their respective testimonies prior to receiving the award, each of the recipients expressed gratitude to the J.P. Hicks Family for the scholarships, which they said would afford them the opportunity to complete their course of studies as prescribed by the UL Administration in a given period of four semesters. The J.P. Hicks Family Mass Communications Scholarship provides support for students at the UL who are interested in Mass Communications; either in print, broadcast or online publications. Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of academic achievement, exceptional talent within the discipline and a commitment to enhance the quality of journalism in Liberia. While presenting the award to each of the recipients, the chair of the scheme, Dr. Jonathan Hicks said that the scholarship award covers the cost of tuition fees and books for a period of up to four semesters at the UL.“It also provides for one-on-one mentorship with professional journalists, a laptop computer for each recipient, and allowance for internet usage.” The J.P. Hicks Family Mass Communications Scholarship is being administered by the Kappa Alpha Psi New York Foundation, Incorporated.Established in 1988, the Kappa Alpha Psi New York Foundation seeks to uplift the communities it serves and support and enhance the achievement of young people. The J. P. Hicks Family Scholarship was created by the family of Dr. Jonathan P. Hicks, a longtime journalist. He is a senior national correspondent with the American-based Black Entertainment Television (BET) and a columnist with the New York Amsterdam news. He is a former senior fellow at the DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn and is a former financial and political reporter with The New York Times. Dr. Hicks is the co-editor of the book, from Disaster to Diversity: What’s next for New York City’s Economy?
