Lincoln Riley Announces Oklahoma’s Starting Quarterback

Ohio State just made their starting quarterback decision official, and now Oklahoma is doing the same.On Monday, Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley announced that Jalen Hurts would be the Sooners’ starting quarterback in 2019. Hurts joined Oklahoma in the offseason in a transfer from Alabama.Hurts was the starting quarterback for Alabama from 2016 to 2017. He led Alabama to back-to-back College Football Playoff title games, but lost one and was benched for the other.In 2018, Hurts lost his starting job to Tua Tagovailoa, which preceded his transfer to Oklahoma. Though he was not much of a Heisman contender at Alabama, he is currently on the award’s shortlist.In three seasons under Nick Saban, Hurts totaled 5,626 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, and only 12 interceptions. He has a completion rate of 62.9-percent.Hurts also presents some options as a runner. He has rushed for 1,923 yards and 23 touchdowns while averaging 5.2 yards per carry.Oklahoma heads into the 2019 season as a top five team in the AP preseason poll. Expectations will certainly be high.Hurts will make his debut on September 1 in Oklahoma’s home opener against Houston.last_img read more
